Abstract
IN a recent letter in Nature Kemp1 postulates, in opposition to our views2–5, as the basic equation for the treatment of irreversible electrochemical processes, the formula: where s and u are the entropy and the energy per unit mass of the system; ν is the specific volume, μ̃k the electrochemical potential per unit mass and ck the mass fraction of component k (see ref. 6 on this subject). In this connexion, we would like to make the following remarks.
