Abstract
DALE, Meredith and Tweedie1 have recently shown that the mode of action of X-rays on certain dissolved enzymes, similarly to the action on aqueous ferrosulphate2 and on aqueous hæ moglobin3, is in agreement with the 'indirect action' mechanism3 as opposed to the 'direct hit' mechanism. It appears that the ionizing radiation activates the water and that the activation products in turn react with the enzyme. Hydrogen peroxide has previously been identified as one product of the irradiation of water4.
