Abstract
REPORTS have recently appeared concerning the activation by halogenated pyrimidines of a repressed Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) genome1–7. We have demonstrated the induction of two EBV-related early and late antigenic products, which represent early antigens (EA)8, 9 and viral capsid antigens (VCA)10, respectively, in non-producer human lymphoblastoid NC-37 and Raji cells by 5-bromodeoxyuridine (BUdR) and 5-iododeoxyuridine (IUdR). These findings have prompted us to investigate further whether membrane antigens (MA)11, another major product related to EBV, can be induced by halogenated pyrimidines as well. We describe here that a marked MA induction occurred rapidly in all individual clones of non-producer NC-37 and Raji cells by exposure to IUdR (ref. 12).
