Abstract
IT is well established that specific puffs can be induced in the polytene chromosomes of Drosophila larvae by treatments such as heat shock1–3 and by substances which interfere with respiration4; however, the intracellular signals produced in these conditions for the induction of specific puffs are not known. It has been suggested5 that these signal(s) might come from mitochondria. I have investigated this possibility, using Drosophila hydei.
