Abstract
WHEN the Uhuru satellite examined the X-ray emission from the region of the galactic centre in 1971 an extended region of emission centred on the radio source Sgr A and about 2° in extent was observed1. We report here details of a transient point X-ray source, A1742–28, which has been observed at the centre of this region by the Ariel V rotation modulation collimator (RMC) experiment. Its rise to a peak and subsequent decline by a factor of two over 12 d were monitored. The position was found to be α = 17 h 42 min 26.0 ± 4.8 s, δ = −28° 59.8 ± 1.2′ (1950.0 coordinates, 90% confidence limits).
