Abstract
GROWTH hormone (GH) and pituitary prolactin (PP) are structurally homologous and have functional similarities both in the lower vertebrates1 and in mammals2. In the whole animal a major function of GH is to stimulate the longitudinal growth of the skeleton, and GH acts by controlling the production of a second series of hormones, the somatomedins. The somatomedins are present in serum and will stimulate the rates of division and matrix production of chondrocytes in vitro3,4. GH itself has no effect in vitro on the cartilage cells, the chondrocytes.
