Coherence in Transpacific Movements of Positive and Negative Anomalies of Sea Surface Temperature, 1953-60

Abstract

Computer analyses of 2 million observations of sea surface temperature provide evidence of orderly transpacific movements of large areas of anomalous warm and cold-surface water which greatly influence environmental conditions off the west coasts of the United States and Canada. These quasipermanent features seem to move around the North Pacific gyre, roughly 180° out of phase, with periods of 5-6 yr.
