Induction of a Unique Fluorescence in the Photoreceptor of the Retina

Abstract

ALTHOUGH the details of the biochemistry of the outer part of the photoreceptor cells of the retina have been studied exhaustively1,2, relatively little attention has been paid to the inner cell body itself which is essentially nuclear. The present observations suggest that this nuclear portion of the photoreeeptor cell plays an unsuspected part in the biology of vision. In essence, we have found that, when retinas treated with o-phthalaldehyde (OPT) are exposed to ultraviolet light, the nuclear part of the rods and cones show a specific fluorescence.
