Time-dependent Immunosuppressive Effects of Anti-thymocyte Serum

Abstract

THE effectiveness of immunosuppressive agents depends greatly on the time of their administration in relation to the time of immunization. The immunosuppressive effects of heterologous anti-lymphoid sera are under intensive investigation but little seems to be known about their time-dependence. Monaco et al.1 found that a course of seven daily injections was most effective in prolonging the survival of allogeneic skin grafts if it was given during the week before grafting and was progressively less effective the later it was begun. On the other hand, Levey and Medawar2 found that a course of two injections was marginally more effective if given on days +2 and +5 relative to the time of grafting than if given on days −1 and +2.
