Presence of Enterochromaffin Cells in the Gut of Amphioxus

Abstract

HISTOCHEMICAL evidence has been found for the presence in the gut of amphioxus of argentaffin cells, which do not appear to have been described formerly ; because of their localization and their histochemical characteristics, they can be considered to be of enterochromaffin type, shown to be present in other groups of Chordata (by Vialli and Erspamer1 for all vertebrates, except Cyclostomata and Teleostea, and by Lison2 for Ascidians).
