Abstract
Abstract. Self-awareness and identity are important cornerstones of thinking in social psychology. On the basis of current knowledge and insights from the social, cultural, and biological sciences, it is attempted to reach an integrative approach to the phenomena of memory and reminiscence. Centrally to our argumentation is the autobiographic memory whose evolutionary, neuroscientific, and cultural descriptions are analyzed. The emotional context and the ontogenetic development of remembrances (as memories related to the own self) provide the frame for an integrated view which includes relations to life span, brain development, social, and cultural environment and genetic predisposition.
