Abstract
Institutional researchers need to be aware ofthe theoretical and normative assumptions they holdregarding the character of institutional behavior. Somecommonly held assumptions can lead to inaccurate assessments of rational organizationalbehavior. Many people's concepts about the nature ofinstitutional intelligence, resources, goals, andproblems appear faulty based on contemporaryorganizational theory. These faulty assumptions lead tomisdiagnosing leaders' and policymakers' actions andlessen the impact of institutional research.
