UNANSWERED PRAYERS: A CISTERCIAN MISSAL AT YORK MINSTER LIBRARY

Abstract

This paper discusses a hitherto overlooked printed missal of Cistercian use at York Minster Library. Deletions to the calendar and text show that it must have been in England during the Reformation. Four manuscript leaves have been bound at the end of the missal; the last leaf has prayers for the pregnancy of Queen Mary i that are known from only one other source. The presence of these prayers raises questions about the continued use of the missal after the Dissolution of the Monasteries and Catholic hopes for Mary’s reign.

Résumé

Cet article examine un exemplaire imprimé d’un missel cistercien jusqu’à présent ignoré, se trouvant dans la bibliothèque de la cathédrale de York. Les ratures figurant sur le calendrier et le texte indiquent qu’il devait se trouver en Angleterre pendant la Réforme. Quatre feuillets manuscrits ont été ajoutés à la fin du missel ; sur le dernier sont inscrites des prières pour le bon déroulement de la grossesse de la reine Marie Ire, dont on ne connait d’autres exemples que sur une autre source. La présence des prières soulève des questions sur la possibilité que le missel ait continué d’être utilisé après la dissolution des monastères et sur les espoirs nourris par les Catholiques quant au règne de Marie.

Zusammenfassung

Diese Abhandlung behandelt ein bisher unbeachtet gebliebenes gedrucktes Zisterzienser-Messbuch in der Bibliothek von York Minster. Streichungen in Kalender und Text zeigen, dass es sich während der Reformation in England befunden hat. Vier handschriftliche Seiten sind am Ende des Messbuchs eingebunden; das letzte Blatt enthält Gebete für die Schwangerschaft von Königin Maria I., die aus einer einzigen anderen Quelle bekannt sind. Das Vorhandensein dieser Gebete wirft Fragen bezüglich der weiteren Verwendung des Messbuchs nach der Auflösung der Klöster und auch bezüglich der Hoffnung auf, die die Katholiken in Marias Regentschaft gesetzt hatten.
