Book description

This combination of textbook and reference manual provides a comprehensive account of gravity and magnetic methods for exploring the subsurface using surface, marine, airborne and satellite measurements. It describes key current topics and techniques, physical properties of rocks and other Earth materials, and digital data analysis methods used to process and interpret anomalies for subsurface information. Each chapter starts with an overview and concludes by listing key concepts to consolidate new learning. An accompanying website presents problem sets and interactive computer-based exercises, providing hands-on experience of processing, modeling and interpreting data. A comprehensive online suite of full-color case histories illustrates the practical utility of modern gravity and magnetic surveys. This is an ideal text for advanced undergraduate and graduate courses and reference text for research academics and professional geophysicists. It is a valuable resource for all those interested in petroleum, engineering, mineral, environmental, geological and archeological exploration of the lithosphere.

Reviews

‘Written by three leading researchers, this is a comprehensive textbook that takes its readers from the fundamentals of potential fields through modern data acquisition, processing, modelling and inversion to practical interpretation. The theory and mathematical derivations are suitable for both beginners and experienced geophysicists. Well-organised and nicely illustrated, it is both informative and clearly written.’

Alan Green - Institute of Geophysics, ETH-Swiss Federal Institute of Technology

‘This extensive work is much more than just a textbook: it includes detailed discussions, such as the philosophy of modelling and the nature of errors, which are critical to properly interpreting gravity and magnetic data, but are often glossed over. A very useful addition to practitioners' reference shelves and an excellent textbook for advanced students.’

Roger C. Searle - Professor Emeritus, Durham University

‘The geophysical applications of gravity and magnetic techniques have advanced a great deal in the twenty-first century. Thus, this rigorous book covering the physical basis, analysis, interpretation, and applications of these techniques is a timely and important contribution. It is designed to serve both the student and practitioner and is enhanced by an innovative website.’

G. Randy Keller - University of Oklahoma and Director of the Oklahoma Geological Survey

'This well-written, comprehensive textbook and reference source will provide students with the basic fundamentals of the geophysical methods of gravity and magnetics … The figures and tables are an added value as they help illustrate key points … This valuable resource will be beneficial to geophysics students now and well into the future, as they enter careers in the field. Highly recommended.'

'This well-written, comprehensive textbook and reference source will provide readers with a comprehensive account of the geophysical methods of gravity and magnetics, including data acquisition, processing, modeling, and practical interpretation … A suite of computational exercises with instructions and software for performing them on the book's website illustrates the practical utility of modern gravity and magnetic surveys in various fields of exploration and research, as well as their potential limitations … This valuable resource will be beneficial to all those interested in petroleum, engineering, mineral, environmental, geological, and archaeological exploration and willing to extend and consolidate their knowledge. It will help students to efficiently gain understanding and appreciation for the gravity and magnetic methods, and it will provide experienced earth scientists with a valuable addition to their exploration libraries.

'Throughout the book, the authors maintain an excellent writing style and an easy-to-follow layout, with many practical suggestions added to the scientific and technical details. The scope and coverage are impressive; there was no relevant topic that I felt was discussed in insufficient detail. Each chapter has an opening abstract and a summary of key points at the end. The text has more than 300 illustrations and approximately 850 references to the primary literature. Color versions of many figures are available as a download. The publisher’s website also provides study questions for using the book as a course text, online exercises, and access to software for data processing and interpretation. In summary, this is an excellent book which will serve as an important text and reference for many years. It should be a key part of any library on geophysics.'

William Green Source: The Leading Edge

'… the authors should be congratulated on producing a scholarly book on an enduring geophysics core subject. "Grav/Mag" is still seen by many as a "value for money" tool for exploring Earth's crusts and upper mantle in frontier offshore and onshore areas and a necessary geophysical technique to employ prior to seismic and drilling. The book will certainly be on my shelf and I trust on that of many other explorationists also.'
