Hepatic encephalopathy has been associated with increased serum GABA activity [97], administration of the GABA receptor antagonist flumazenil provides short-term relief of symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy [98], and reduced GABA serum levels are found in alcohol withdrawal [99]. A considerable body of evidence indicates that administration of GABA receptor agonists, in particular benzodiazepines, is associated with increased rates of delirium in the ICU [12,13,100].
