CAVD is a slowly progressive disorder of dysregulated calcium deposition, very common in the elderly. It is found in 26% of the population over the age of 65 [2,3], 35% between 75 and 84 years of age, and up to 50% of those over 85 [4,5]. CAVD ranges from mild valve thickening without obstruction of blood flow, known as aortic sclerosis, to severe calcification with impaired leaflet motion, termed aortic stenosis.
