Oral and maxillofacial pathologyParathyroid hormone-related protein (PTHrP) expression in ameloblastoma
Section snippets
Materials and methods
The files of the Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology and the Surgical Pathology Laboratories, Medical College of Georgia, were searched for cases of AB archived between 1980 and 2002. Thirty cases were identified, retrieved, and examined by 2 of the authors (R.A.A., R.K.V.), and the diagnosis was verified in each case. Among the 30 cases, 24 were conventional AB (80%), 4 were unicystic AB (13%), and 2 cases represented AB arising in dentigerous cyst (7%). Formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue
Clinical data
Clinical findings pertaining to the 30 patients are summarized in Table 1. Cases were divided according to race and gender with all demographic data available in 28 of 30 cases. Eighteen of the 30 cases (60%) were found in males, 12 (40%) were African Americans, 5 (17%) were Caucasians, and in 1 (3%) case race was not recorded. Twelve of the 30 (40%) cases were found in females, 9 (30%) of whom were African Americans, 2 (7%) were Caucasians, and in one (3%) instance race was not recorded.
Discussion
In our series of cases of AB, clinical findings, demographic data, and patient age distribution matched that reported in the literature. All cases exhibited PTHrP expression with various levels of immunoreactivity. Statistically, there was no significant relationship between levels of immunoreactivity and the microscopic subtype of AB. This finding may be due to the small sample size of each microscopic subtype, particularly in the case of unicystic AB, and in AB arising in dentigerous cyst.

Whereas PTHrP is often expressed in ameloblastoma, it is particularly highly expressed in acanthomatous types.11-13 It has been suggested that ameloblastoma expression of PTHrP might play a significant role in local bone resorption, thus accounting for the destructive and infiltrative growth of this tumor.11-13
