  • First record of Macaca (Cercopithecidae, Primates) in the Middle Pleistocene of Greece

    2022, Journal of Human Evolution
    Citation Excerpt :

In 2013, a targeted survey of Pleistocene sediments in the basin was conducted by a joint team from the Ephorate of Palaeoanthropology-Speleology (EPS) of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Palaeoanthropology working group of the University of Tübingen (Thompson et al., 2018). During this survey, the new locality Marathousa 1 was discovered within the Marathousa Member of the Choremi Formation (Fig. 1A; Panagopoulou et al., 2015, 2018; Harvati, 2016; Harvati et al., 2016, Harvati et al., 2018; Tourloukis and Harvati, 2018). Systematic excavations of the site were conducted in 2014–2019, yielding a large Lower Paleolithic lithic assemblage, found in stratigraphic association with faunal remains, some of which exhibit evidence of human processing (Konidaris et al., 2018; Tourloukis et al., 2018a).

  • Deposit-centered archaeological survey and the search for the Aegean Palaeolithic: A geoarchaeological perspective

    2020, Quaternary International
    Citation Excerpt :

Kéraudren et al. (2000) collected Senegalese fauna (S. bubonious) from these same deposits, thereby inferring at a minimum a MIS 5e age for the algal reef and potentially for the overlying soil horizon. The importance of sedimentary basins for preserving stratified Quaternary deposits, and potentially Palaeolithic sites in Greece, has long been known (Dakaris et al., 1964; Higgs and Vita-Finzi, 1966) and has witnessed renewed focus (Tourloukis, 2010, 2016; Tourloukis and Karkanas, 2012; Tourloukis et al., 2015; Harvati et al., 2018; Thompson et al., 2018). Of particular interest to archaeologists are internally drained basins that formed in extensional tectonic settings (basin and range) or as karstic basins in areas of extensive outcropping of carbonate bedrock where subsequent stream sapping or fault growth have caused the incision into exposure of stratified sedimentary fill and soils spanning the Quaternary (Fig. 5e and f); Angelier et al. (1982); Leeder and Jackson (1993); Tourloukis (2010).
