Abstract

The spin patterns in strained metamagnetic EuSe are investigated. EuSe/PbSe1-xTex superlattices are grown by molecular beam epitaxy and the structural quality is determined by in situ as well as ex situ characterisation methods. We achieve nearly perfect 2D superlattice layers up to 100 periods. It is demonstrated that the magnetic properties of EuSe can be changed by applying biaxial strain from non-magnetic PbSe1-xTex spacer layers on thin EuSe layers. Combining neutron diffraction data with susceptibility measurements, the different magnetic phases in the complex HT phase diagram of strained EuSe can be related to specific spin configurations.
