The Patient Experience: The Relationship Between Vocal Handicap, Congruency, Perceived Present Control, and Mood Across Four Voice Disorders
Section snippets
INTRODUCTION
Voice disorders, the most common communication impairment throughout the lifespan, affect approximately 20 million Americans each year.1 Although typically non-life-threatening, they can cause considerable impact on an individual's quality of life. Negative consequences on individuals’ social communication, employment, and overall wellbeing can lead to greater health consequences.1, 2, 3, 4 The potential for negative sequalae in psychosocial well-being presents clinical importance to the
Study design and participants
This study represents a retrospective between-subject, cross-sectional, nonexperimental design, and was approved by the University of Pittsburgh's institutional review board (IRB # 20050058). Informed consent was obtained from all patients before data were collected via paper form. Data were collected from 628 patients between the ages 21 and 91 seen at the University of Pittsburgh Voice Center in 2020 with gaps in collection in adherence to university and state COVID-19 guidelines. Data
RESULTS
Of the 623 patients that completed the self-report measures, there were 335 patients that qualified for further analysis based on their diagnosis. Table 1 displays distribution of gender and age across diagnoses. Figure 1 depicts the path of each potential patient from identification through data analysis.
DISCUSSION
This investigation sought to analyze the relationship among various self-report measures relating to patients’ perceived experience of having a voice disorder in a typical voice clinic population. This study is an initial investigation into patients’ perceived experience of voice impairment with the goal of gaining a more comprehensive understanding of the multiple factors that influence patient's experience of voice impairment. Three theoretically distinct constructs: handicap, perceived
CONCLUSIONS
Patient perceived outcome measures are widely used clinical tools to assess the perceived impact of a voice disorder. There are multiple facets of patient perception, including vocal handicap, perceived control, vocal congruence, and likely many others. A broadened battery of patient perceived outcome measures may provide valuable information to clinicians about the impact of the patient's voice disorder and how individuals may respond to treatment. Results from this study described our patient
