Plant
Pyrrosia petiolosa Ching (Polypodiaceae), a whole plant purchased from a drugstore in Hsinchu, Taiwan. Identified by Dr. Te-Sheng Chang.
Use in traditional medicine
Used as a traditional Oriental medicine and belonging to the “li-shui-shen-shih” category of drugs. It is used traditionally to treat urinary tract infections and urolithiasis.
Tested material
50% ethanol extract [1].
Studied activity
Free radical scavenging activity by 1,1-Diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay, superoxide radical scavenging activity by nitroblue tetrazolium (NBT) assay, lipid peroxidation activity by TBARS assay, and DNA protective effect by hydroxyl radical-induced DNA strand scission assay. The determination of total phenolics based on Folin-Ciocalteu reagent [2], was expressed as mg/g of gallic acid equivalents (GAE) per lyophylisate. Total flavonoid, expressed as mg/g, based on quercetin as standard [1]

Conclusions
The IC50 value (the concentration required to inhibit a radical formation by 50%) of P. petiolosa extract in DPPH assay is 140 μg/ml. It is less than that of (+) catechin (35 μg/ml), ascorbic acid (50 μg/ml), Acacia confusa (5 μg/ml) [3], Uncaria tomentosa (18 μg/ml) [4], Anthriscus cerefolium (45 μg/ml) [5], Polygonum aviculare, (50 μg/ml) [1], and Polygonum cuspidatum (110 μg/ml) [6]. Nevertheless, P. petiolosa extract is still a source of natural antioxidants.
