Short reportAntioxidant activity of Agaricus blazei
Section snippets
Plant
A. blazei fruiting bodies, collected on “Estancia Valemar” (Sao Jose do Rio Preto — SP) were identified by Dr. Arailde Fontes Urben (EMBRAPA researcher).
Uses in traditional medicine
The infusion of the fruiting body has traditionally been used in Brazil for prevention of cancer [1], [2], [3], [4], and diabetes, hyperlipidemia, arteriosclerosis and chronic hepatitis activities [5].
Previously isolated classes of constituents
Ergosterol [5], polysaccharides [2], [6], [7] and phenolic compounds [8].
Tested material
Ethanol extract (yield: 4.43%) of the dried (40 °C) material and ethylacetate fraction (yield: 2.25%) and hydroxyalcoholic soluble fraction (0.54%).
Studied activity
Bleaching of the DPPH [9], [10] and ABTS•+ radicals [11].
Results
Reported in Table 1.
Conclusions
The ethanolic extract and the ethyl acetate and hydroalcoholic fractions from A. blazei have a powerful antioxidant activity useful for the treatment of various diseases mediated by radicals species.

Chemical composition and antioxidant activity of dried powder formulations of Agaricus blazei and Lentinus edodes
2013, Food ChemistryCitation Excerpt :Lentinus edodes, known as shiitake mushroom, has received great attention due to positive health effects, including antitumour and hypocholesterolemic activity (Kitzberger, Pedrosa, & Ferreira, 2007), related to the presence of β-glucans (Minato, Mizuno, Terai, & Tsuchida, 1999). There are available in the literature different studies on the nutrient and phytochemical composition of A. blazei and L. edodes fruiting bodies (e.g. Andrade, Minhoni, & Zied, 2008; Carvajal et al., 2012; Cheung & Cheung, 2005; Cheung, Cheung, & Ooi, 2003; Choi, Lee, Chun, Lee, & Lee, 2006; Firenzuoli et al., 2008; Kim et al., 2009; Kitzberger et al., 2007; Longvah & Deosthale, 1998; Manzi, Gambelli, Marconi, Vivanti, & Pizzoferrato, 1999; Mattila et al., 2001; Oliveira et al., 2007; Reis, Barros, et al., 2012; Reis, Martins et al., 2012; Soares et al., 2009; Tsai et al., 2007; Yang et al., 2002; Çağlarırmak, 2007). Nevertheless, as far as we know, this is the first report on chemical composition (nutrients and bioactive compounds) and antioxidant activity (free radical scavenging activity, reducing power and lipid peroxidation inhibition) of dried powder formulations of the mentioned mushroom species.
Agaricus subrufescens: A review
2012, Saudi Journal of Biological SciencesCitation Excerpt :There are contrary effects between in vivo and ex vivo assays with normal patients, pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines are controversial upregulated and downregulated, respectively. This discrepancy was proposed by the antioxidant potential of A. subrufescens (Ker et al., 2005; Oliveira et al., 2007). The limited the absorption of large macromolecules complex or bioactive molecule, such as β-glucans, across the intestinal mucosa to the reticuloendothelial system and blood of the gastrointestinal tracts.
Bioactivities of water-soluble polysaccharides from Jisongrong mushroom: Anti-breast carcinoma cell and antioxidant potential
2011, International Journal of Biological MacromoleculesCitation Excerpt :Among various naturally occurring substances, polysaccharide extracts from mushrooms may prove to be one of the useful candidates in the search for effective, non-toxic substances with free radical scavenging activity. Polysaccharide extracts from Jisongrong mushroom were reported to have scavenging effects on superoxide and hydroxyl radicals [6,7]. In this study, we analysed chemical structure of Jisongrong polysaccharides.
