Effect of membrane pore size on the particle fouling in membrane filtration
Abstract
The effects of membrane pore size and operating conditions on the particle fouling in “dead-end” microfiltration are studied by use of membrane blocking models. Two track-etched membranes (Isopore® membrane) with the mean pore diameters of 0.2 and 0.4 μm, respectively, are used as the filter media to filter 0.15 μm polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) particles. A blocking chart is established for relating the operating conditions and the particle fouling for the testing materials. The major factors affecting the blocking index, particle accumulation and filtration flux, are discussed thoroughly. The blocking index varies gradually at the initial period of filtration, keeps at ca. 0.5 for a while and then suddenly drops to zero at a critical condition. The blocking index for 0.4 μm membrane is always larger than that for 0.2 μm membrane under the same filtration pressure and filtration flux due to more severe membrane blocking. The critical point at which the filtration transforms from membrane blocking to cake filtration occurs at a lower filtration flux or a lower particle accumulation for the membrane with larger pore size or under lower filtration pressure. The normalized resistance coefficient can be correlated to a unique function of blocking index under various operating conditions and for different membranes.

Exploring the transformation of polyethylene and polyamide microplastics during membrane filtration through FlowCam analysis
2024, Separation and Purification TechnologyThis study explored the applicability of fluid imaging microscopy (FlowCam) as a valuable tool for characterizing microplastic transformations, addressing the urgent need for rapid microplastic measurement techniques. FlowCam offers multiple measurement outputs, making it suitable for automated classification to separate polyethylene (PE) and polyamide (PA) microplastics in wastewater samples. Customized libraries for each type of microplastic were constructed using statistical analysis with appropriate confidence intervals, thus enhancing sorting accuracy. Comparing multiple FlowCam outputs before and after membrane filtration revealed limitations in dimensional outputs, particularly for irregularly shaped PA microplastics. Specifically, a marginal increase in the elongation of PA microplastics after filtration suggested their ability to longitudinally penetrate pores due to their high length relative to thickness. In contrast, PE microplastics with higher circularity, resembling ideal spheres, exhibited greater susceptibility to removal by the membrane pores. Therefore, membranes were more susceptible to wastewater containing PA microplastics, as these are complex and non-uniform particles, that are more likely to induce pore blockage and might form denser cake layers on the membrane surface by tightly filling interstitial spaces. These findings demonstrate the significant role of microplastic geometry and morphology in retention mechanisms and membrane fouling. Collectively, our findings highlight the potential of FlowCam for microplastic identification and provide a valuable basis for the characterization of microplastic transformations within membrane filtration systems, addressing a pressing concern in environmental science within engineered systems.
Arduino and IoT-based direct filter observation method monitoring the color change of water filter for safe drinking water
2022, Journal of Water Process EngineeringGlobally, the red water crisis continues to occur because of aging water pipelines, excessive water system conversion, and inadequate water tank management. Therefore, in this study, we have developed a monitoring system for water tank filters in apartment buildings by using Arduino and Internet of Things (IoT) technology to realize efficient water tank management. The proposed system uses grayscale, RGB color, and pressure sensors, and these sensors are connected to an Arduino. In the performance evaluation of the direct filter monitoring system using a color sensor, the system could effectively detect the turbid water inflow by the signal-to-noise ratio of derivative of color change. Moreover, the representative turbidity-causing minerals such as iron (III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH)), iron (III) oxide (Fe2O3), manganese oxide (MnO2) could be distinguished by a different color. A correlation analysis between pressure change and turbidity of filtered water yielded an R-square value of 0.9 or higher under most conditions. Based on the results obtained in the lab-scale test, a four-stage notification algorithm for safe filter operation was proposed. Finally, the developed direct filter monitoring system was installed in an apartment complex as a field demonstration, and it verified that the direct filter monitoring system can provide reliable notifications with high accuracy. Therefore, the direct filter monitoring system developed in this study can be widely used to manage water filter to ensure safe water supply in apartment complexes.
Municipal wastewater treatment and fouling in microalgal-activated sludge membrane bioreactor: Cultivation in raw and treated wastewater
2022, Journal of Water Process EngineeringSince the advent of conventional activated sludge biological treatment plants, their low efficiency in nitrogen and phosphorus removal has become a significant concern. Therefore, in this study, the performance of microalgal-activated sludge membrane bioreactor (MAS-MBR) as a self-biological treatment or as a post-treatment for conventional biological treatments was investigated. A continuous MAS-MBR with two ratios of algae/sludge (only microalgae and 5:1) was used to treat raw and treated wastewater. The optimum case was achieved with the cultivation of mixed algae/sludge in raw wastewater (R2 case). In this case, the ammonium and phosphorus removal efficiencies were 94.36 ± 3.5 and 88.37 ± 3 %, respectively. Furthermore, the highest oxygen production rate (OPR) and oxygen uptake rate (OUR) values were obtained in this case (145.58 ± 3 and 68.43 ± 1.5 mgO2/lit.d, respectively). In addition, membrane fouling was adversely increased in R2 compared with other cases, indicating the necessity of membrane cleaning for high-performance bioreactors in nutrient removal. Transmembrane pressure (TMP) jump in R2 was captured after 14 days, while the results supported that the membrane fouling was influenced by raised production of carbohydrate fraction of soluble microbial products (SMPc) and protein fraction of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSp) at first and last stages, respectively. Therefore, although the MAS-MBR is a potential candidate as a self-biological treatment, the membrane fouling is high in this case.
Tailoring microstructure of polysulfone membranes via novel hexagonal ZnO particles to achieve improved filtration performance
2022, Journal of Membrane ScienceIncorporation of nanofillers into polymeric membranes has been the trend in the realm of membrane research owing to the improvements in many filtration characteristics with the modifications of membrane structure, morphology and bulk properties. The major drawback of the nanoparticle embedded membrane is the uncontrollable agglomeration, which could be mitigated by tailoring microstructure of the matrix by using designed nanoparticles. In the present study, polysulfone (PSf) based ultrafiltration membranes incorporated with designed MicNo® platelets composed of strongly bonded ZnO nanoparticles were prepared as single- and double-layer membranes using immersion precipitation technique. Filtration performance, morphological and bulk properties of the novel composite membranes containing MicNo® powders of varying amounts (0.01–1%, wt.) and particle sizes were determined in comparison to those of pristine PSf membrane. Single-layer composite membrane containing 0.5% MicNo® exhibited the greatest permeance improvement of 74% and a marked enhancement of 116% could be achieved with double-layer membrane system containing 0.5% and 0.1% MicNo® in the upper and bottom layers, respectively. The results demonstrated that MicNo® powders were successfully distributed throughout the membrane matrix without any surface imperfections owing to the well alignment of ZnO particles on their hexagonal platelet surfaces, which prevented the agglomeration of primary ZnO particles that ensured a more efficient hydrophilic surface generation in the membrane.
Characteristics of flat-sheet ceramic ultrafiltration membranes for lake water treatment: A pilot study
2022, Separation and Purification TechnologyIn order to explore the characteristics of ceramic membranes in the treatment of surface water with high turbidity and high content of organic matters, a pilot-scale test was carried out on the water treatment process composed of pre-zonation, coagulation, sedimentation, and ultrafiltration using flat-sheet ceramic membranes. The water purification effect of the combined process and the influences of different operating parameters on membrane fouling were comprehensively investigated. The results showed that the effluent turbidity of the combined process could be controlled below 0.1 NTU, and the removal rates of CODMn, DOC and UV254 in the raw water were 58%, 49%, and 45%, respectively. The membrane fouling rate largely depended on the permeate flux; when the constant permeate fluxes were set at 80, 100, 120 and 150 L m−2h−1, the rising rates of the transmembrane pressure (TMP) in the early stage were 0.18, 0.42, 1.20 and 2.04 kPa/h, respectively. The permeate production period had a relatively small effect on the membrane fouling rate, and the “high-intensity short-time” mode was demonstrated more efficient than the “low-intensity long-time” mode during backwashing. Under the optimized conditions, no chemical cleaning was required by the ceramic membranes during 12 days of continuous operation, with the TMP increasing by only 20 kPa. A series of characterizations suggested that the irreversible membrane fouling was mainly caused by proteins, humic substances and silicates. The chemical cleaning strategy with the combined use of NaClO and acid cleaning agents was recommended for the recovery of membrane performance.
Symmetric forward osmosis membrane coupled with dendritic draw solute: New insights into sustainable properties
2021, Journal of Membrane ScienceThe development of current forward osmosis (FO) technology has experienced a significant challenge because of the ineliminable internal concentration polarization effect in conventional asymmetric FO membranes as well as the extremely energy-intensive recovery process of the common draw solutes (e.g., NaCl). Here, we report, for the first time, a coupling system comprising a symmetric FO (SFO) membrane and a series of macromolecular draw solutes (MDS). The lack of a support layer in the SFO membrane facilitates free MDS diffusion, thus completely eliminating the ICP effect. As a result, the obtained reverse flux selectivity (, ratio of water flux to reverse salt flux) of the SFO/MDS system was approximately 5000, 20000, and 40000 L mol−1, which were 2–3 orders of magnitude higher than that of the conventional salt-based FO system. Moreover, due to the low rejections to inorganic salts, the SFO membrane exhibited the unique ability for allowing most NaCl to pass through while retained most MDS simultaneously, which endowed a great utility of the SFO/MDS system for desalination of textile wastewater. Subsequently, the MDS with large molecular weights could be readily recovered by a facile nanofiltration membrane process with a much higher water flux than that of the conventional reverse osmosis process at the same operating pressure, indicating the high energy-saving capacity of the SFO/MDS system. Given the significant compatibility of SFO and MDS, our study provides a new coupling strategy for the development of sustainable FO technologies.
