Coercive-sexting: Predicting adolescent initial exposure to electronic coercive sexual dating violence
Section snippets
Overview
Electronic dating violence is recognized as a significant behavioral problem affecting as many as three in four adolescents (Ellyson et al., 2021). Though often studied as a general construct, researchers postulate that electronic dating violence encompasses multiple domains, including electronic monitoring, electronic coercion, and electronic harassment (Cava et al., 2020; Ellyson et al., 2021; Thulin et al., 2020, 2021). While the latter is most prevalent (Thulin et al., 2021), electronic
Participants & procedure
This research is drawn from a four-year longitudinal study of modifiable risk and protective factors for TDV perpetration. Adolescents were recruited from six school districts (N = 1236) in Southeast Michigan. Youth completed self-administered questionnaires. The written questionnaires were completed in a group setting, with youth dispersed in large rooms (i.e., auditoriums and cafeterias) to protect privacy. Questionnaire completion took approximately 1 h. In addition to the original survey
Conclusion
Electronic coercion in dating relationships is a prevalent problem in adolescence. We found that by age 15, one in five youth report initial electronic coercion perpetration, which increased to one in three youth by age 18. Risk factors of earlier timing of initial perpetration differed based on age, with greater use of technology to communicate with peers at age 12, greater lifetime use of pornography at age 12, report of electronic harassment in a dating relationship at age 12, and engagement
