A case of sarcoidosis occurring within an extensive burns scar

Summary

Scarring from burn injuries can result in cosmetic and functional deformities. In addition, late complications can also occur presenting as other pathology developing within the scarred tissue. We report a unique case of cutaneous sarcoidosis developing within a burns scar in an adult male who sustained a burns injury to his torso, right arm and thigh.

Case report

A 26-year-old male sustained industrial oil burns whilst working as a machine operator. The patient was referred to the regional burns unit where he was diagnosed with mixed thickness burns to 10% of the body surface area which included the back, right anterior thigh, right middle and upper lateral arm and neck. Discussion

Patients who sustain burns injuries can develop significant complications from their injuries both functionally and cosmetically with scar contracture, hypertrophy and abnormal pigmentation.

Late complications within burns scars are recognised and include malignant transformation with the most common carcinomas to develop being squamous in type.4 Reports of tumour arising in posttraumatic scars include the classic description by a French physician Marjolin.5 However, it was Dupuytren who
