Methods
Categorical variables were expressed as count (percentage) and compared by the χ2 test. Continuous variables were expressed as means ± standard deviation and compared by either the t-test or 1-way analysis of variance. Survival analyses were performed by the Kaplan-Meier method with censoring for heart transplantation or cessation of support. The mutually exclusive end points of death, transplantation, and recovery were analyzed with competing risk analysis.6 For renal function, estimated
Patient Population
There are now data from >1300 patients in Pedimacs, with 127 additional devices and 98 additional patients included since the last report. From September 19, 2012, to December 31, 2021, 1355 devices in 1109 patients were reported to the registry (Figure 1) from 42 North American hospitals (Supplemental Table 2). The most common devices implanted were IC in 448 (40%), followed by PP (306 [28%]), PC (293 [26%]), percutaneous (58 [5%]), and total artificial heart (4 [<1%]). Among the patients
Comment
This Sixth Pedimacs Report represents the evolutional changes observed in the field of pediatric VAD support during the last 10 years from 2012 to 2021. Overall, the pediatric community should celebrate steady survival outcomes and even improving AEs (except for infection) over time, despite increasing complexity of included patients, such as those with CHD, particularly single-ventricle anatomy, which composed >60% of the CHD cohort. As repeatedly seen in the previous annual reports, there are
