Abstract

This chapter will introduce the reader to the use of cardiac imaging for the evaluation and management of patients with heart failure of various etiologies. Echocardiography, including the use of standard techniques in cardiac resynchronization therapy, is described in detail. Newer methods such as three-dimensional echo and strain imaging are detailed. The role of cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in the assessment of patients with cardiomyopathy and in valvular heart disease is depicted. Nuclear medicine techniques for detection of cardiomyopathies and in the assessment of metabolism and autonomic dysfunction are emphasized. The role of cardiovascular computed tomography in—at present—a limited set of applications is described. Emerging techniques, such as four-dimensional flow CMR imaging and molecular imaging, are also highlighted.
