Abstract

Air pollution from anthropogenic sources is a major environmental health risk to human health. More than 80% of people living in urban areas worldwide are presently exposed to harmful levels of particulate matter, tropospheric ozone, and sulfur and nitrogen dioxides. Particulate matter affects more people than any other pollutant. Most developed countries have made a large effort in the last decades to improve air quality by means of the elaboration and implementation of technological measures and legislation. However, additional measures targeting specific sources which are presently poorly controlled must be performed. Developing countries appear to be following a path similar to the one plodded by more developed countries in the past.
