Aedes albopictus in Africa

Identifying the current geographic range of disease vectors is a critical first step towards determining effective mechanisms for controlling and potentially eradicating them. This is particularly true given that historical vector ranges may expand due to changing climates and human activity. The Aedes subgenus Stegomyia contains over 100 species, and among them, Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus mosquitoes represent the largest concern for public health, spreading dengue, chikungunya, and zika viruses. While Ae. aegypti has been observed in the country of Zambia for decades, Ae. albopictus has not. In 2015 we sampled four urban and three rural areas in Zambia for Aedes species. Using DNA barcoding, we confirmed the presence of immature and adult Ae. albopictus at two sites: Siavonga and Livingstone. These genotypes seem most closely related to specimens previously collected in Mozambique based on mtDNA barcoding. We resampled Siavonga and Livingstone sites in 2019, again observing immature and adult Ae. albopictus at both sites. Relative Ae. albopictus frequencies were similar between sites, with the exception of immature life stages, which were higher in Siavonga than in Livingstone in 2019. While Ae. albopictus frequencies did not vary through time in Livingstone, both immature and adult frequencies increased through time in Siavonga. This report serves to document the presence of Ae. albopictus in Zambia, which will contribute to understanding the potential public health implications of this disease vector in southern Africa.

The distribution of Aedes albopictus across west Africa is well documented. However, little has been done to synthesise data and establish the current distribution of this invasive vector in central and east Africa. In this Viewpoint, we show that A albopictus is establishing across Africa, how this is potentially related to urbanisation, and how establishment poses risks of near-term increases in arbovirus transmission. We then use existing species distribution maps for A albopictus and Aedes aegypti to produce consensus estimates of suitability and make these estimates accessible. Although urban development and increased trade have economic and other societal gains, the resulting potential changes in Aedes-borne virus epidemiology require a discussion of how cross-country collaboration and mitigation could be facilitated. Failure to respond to species invasion could result in increased transmission of Aedes-associated pathogens, including dengue, chikungunya, and Rift Valley fever viruses.

Dengue fever is an important mosquito-borne viral infectious disease that mostly occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. According to epidemiological data from the Center for Disease Control of Taiwan, more than 98.62% of outbreaks of indigenous total dengue cases were reported in the southern part of Taiwan. Southern Taiwan is an aggregate area encompassing Tainan, Kaohsiung, and Pingtung, all of which are located below the Tropic of Cancer (23º35′N). With a few exceptions, dengue outbreaks mainly occur in southern Taiwan which is highly associated or overlaps with the prevalence of Aedes aegypti. A. aegypti is presumed to be absent from the northern part of Taiwan, while Aedes albopictus breeds in areas throughout the island. According a collection of 20 years of epidemiological data from Taiwan, the inability of A. aegypti to survive the winter weather in northern Taiwan may account for its restricted geographical distribution and that of dengue outbreaks it transmits. A. aegypti, unlike temperate strains of A. albopictus, lacks embryonic diapause signaled by a short photoperiod which thus reduces its cold-hardiness. Therefore it is intolerant of low temperatures that frequently accompany rains and unable to survive during winter in the northern part of Taiwan.

Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus were reported to be significant as vectors of dengue fever. In Taiwan, the latter is distributed throughout the island while the former appears only south of the Tropic of Cancer; i.e., 23.5° N. In the past decade, there were five outbreaks with over 1000 cases of dengue fever in Taiwan. Without exception, these outbreaks all occurred in the south where the two Aedes mosquitoes are sympartic. According to the Center for Disease Control of Taiwan, imported cases are thought to provide the seeds of dengue outbreaks every year. Mostly, the number of imported cases is greater in northern island, probably due to a larger population of travelers and imported workers from endemic countries. Looking at the example in 2002, northern, central, and southern parts of Taiwan reported 28, 11, and 13 imported cases, respectively. However, 54, 21, and 5309 total cases were confirmed in the corresponding regions over the entire year, indicating a significant skew of case distributions. A hypothesis is thus inspired that the existence of Ae. aegypti is a prerequisite to initiate a dengue outbreak, while participation of Ae. albopictus expands or maintains the scale until the de novo herd immunity reaches high level.

In Nigeria, dengue fever caused by dengue virus, types 1 and 2 has been diagnosed for many years. Although, seroepidemiological surveys have shown that dengue virus activity is, widespread in the country, there is scanty information on dengue, hemorrhagic fever with little attention paid to dengue fever largely, because it presents as classical dengue fever characterized by fever, myalgia, headache, arthralgia, retro-orbital pain, gastro intestinal, symptoms and skin rash. We are updating the current information of dengue, in Nigeria, as well as DHF which is an emerging disease in the west, African country.

PUBMED, Google scholar, cross-reference databases and individual publications not publicly archived were used. All available literature on, dengue from Nigeria were identified.

Dengue virus 3 and 4 have been recently detected in Nigeria, with the emergence of dengue haemorrhagic fever for the first time. Poor, surveillance, underreporting, and misdiagnosis of the disease as malaria, are major problems.

Priority must be given to increasing surveillance activity to, detect more dengue haemorrhagic fever cases and determine the magnitude, of the dengue problem. It is important to enhance the capacity of, laboratories to diagnose dengue haemorrhagic fever by providing them with, modern equipment, reagents and new infrastructure.
