A novel cyano-bridged one-dimensional chain complex: [Gd(bet)2(H2O)3Fe(CN)6]n (bet=betaine)
Introduction
Hexacyanometallate complexes have been widely studied in many fields such as molecular-based magnets [1], [2] in which the Prussian blue analogues particularly have shown fascinating magnetic properties with high Tc values [3], [4], [5], [6] and magneto-optical phenomenon [7]. However, the spin coupling mechanism between the metal ions in these Prussian blue analogues remains unknown due to lack of their crystal structures [8]. For this purpose, crystal structures for cyano-bridged complexes have been obtained and most of which are related to transition metal ions [9], [10], [11], [12], [13], [14]. It is worthy to note that cyano-bridged lanthanide-transition metal complexes have been rarely reported though rare earth elements play an important role in magnetic materials. Furthermore, so far the 4f-3d magnetic molecular complexes synthesized are mainly focused on the Ln–Cu complexes [15], [16], [17], [18], [19], [20]. It is possible for the lanthanide hexacyanometallate of iron or chromium to form a simple dinuclear complex [21], [22]. Chen and coworkers reported the crystal structures of some polynuclear Gd–bet–Cu complexes [23], [24]. In the present work, a novel cyano-bridged chain structural complex with zwitterionic ligand bet, [Gd(bet)2(H2O)3Fe(CN)6]n (bet=betaine) is described.

Synthesis
To a water (5 ml) solution of Gd(NO3)3·6H2O (0.227 g, 0.5 mmol), betaine hydrochloride (0.307 g, 2 mmol) dissolved in 5 ml water was added. K3[Fe(CN)6] (0.165 g, 0.5 mmol) in a minimum amount of water was slowly added to the reaction mixture under stirring. The resulting solution was filtered and the filtrate was allowed to stand at room temperature in dark. After two days, well-shaped light-yellow crystals were obtained. Anal. Results and discussion
Fig. 1 shows the crystal structure of the title complex. An X-ray crystal diffraction analysis revealed that the title complex unit consists of one Gd atom, two bet ligands, three H2O aqua ligands and a [Fe(CN)6] group linked through two CN bridge. The Gd atom is eight-coordinated consisting of six oxygen atoms from two bet ligands and three aqua ligands as well as two nitrogen atoms from the two bridging CN groups. The geometry of Gd atoms is eight-coordinate and the coordination polyhedron

Zwitterion coordination to hard cations: Synthesis and characterization of betaine coordination compounds with divalent Mg, Ca, Sr and Ba and of trivalent Y, La and Pr
2023, Inorganica Chimica ActaCitation Excerpt :In this study, we focus on betaine coordination to hard cations and address derivatives of the zwitterionic ligand with alkaline earth and rare earth cations. We are not aware of any structurally characterized compounds in which betaine is coordinated to an alkali earth cation, and only few rare earth compounds have been reported [15–22]. We here address this unexplored area with the synthesis and structural characterization of the first MgII, CaII, SrII and BaII betaine coordination compounds.
