In this issue of Molecular Cell, Bell et al. identify an isoform of hTAFII80 that is induced in response to several proapoptotic stimuli. The finding that extracellular signals can lead to changes in the subunit composition of TFIID provides an example of how regulated activity of the general transcription factors may contribute to inducible programs of gene expression.
