Histopathologic analysis of the 6 cases showed that 3 of them presented histopathologic features of chronic sialadenitis (Fig. 2, A), 1 with sclerosant sialadenitis, and 2 presented glandular tissue with normal appearance (Fig. 2, B). Although IHSG has not been given much attention—only 2 reports6,7 in the literature—it is important that clinicians be aware of its features, mainly because it is relatively frequent and may resemble other pathological conditions, particularly glandular neoplasms.7 The purpose of this study was to investigate some etiologic factors associated with this condition.

The same interlobular variations in microscopic aspects already discussed (Fig. 5) were also observed between the right and left glands. Previous studies have indicated the possible influence of the proximity of the sublingual glands to the floor of the mouth and their relationship with the presence or absence of posterior teeth.30–32 Although various studies were conducted using unilateral specimens,4,7,8,9,13 or only part of one gland,1,2 we believe that the present results were better supported by the bilateral approach.
