In another study, C/N of 0.8–1.1 was found to promote partial nitrification (Zhang et al., 2007). On the other hand, since the discovery of heterotrophic nitrification-aerobic denitrification (HN-AD) bacteria, the nitrification enhanced by heterotrophic-autotrophic coupling becomes more diverse.

2022, Journal of Environmental ManagementCitation Excerpt :To overcome the high carbon requirement and energy consumption demands of nitrification-denitrification, the conventional method has been modified, using a partial nitrification method which avoids the formation of nitrate and converts nitrite into nitrogen. Partial nitrification has several advantages such as a reduced carbon source requirement by 40% (Zhang et al., 2007) and reduced need for aeration by 25% (Yang et al., 2017a), as well as a reduced reaction time and decreased levels of sludge production (Ge et al., 2015). However, establishing stable nitritation is a critical step in the partial nitrification process.
Treatment of young and stabilized landfill leachate by integrated sequencing batch reactor (SBR) and reverse osmosis (RO) process
2021, Environmental Nanotechnology, Monitoring and ManagementCitation Excerpt :As a result of SBR pretreatment, a very high removal efficiency for N-NH4+ (99%) for young and stabilized leachate was observed. A similar effect of N-NH4+ removal was achieved by Zhang et al. (2007). Analyzing the SBR process, it can be concluded that the removal efficiencies of general parameters such as EC and TN were higher in the case of young leachate and were 28% and 86% respectively (compared to 5% and 47% in old leachate).
