A special experimental procedure was setup to test the interaction of corn starch and ammonium perchlorate on these two surfaces; though one cannot exclude some uncertainty due in particular to the difficulty in preparing homogeneous starch solutions, well reproducible results were obtained upon S and AP interactions: these two compounds interact with COOH or COOH/NH2 terminated surface; this is easily explained by the possible formation of H-bonds between the OH of the starch molecule and the COOH, NH2 of the two terminal functions, in agreement with a study of starch interaction with kaolin[28]. As for ammonium perchlorate, the main interactions seem to occur between NH4+ groups and the surface, likely via electrostatic interaction with the COO− groups present on the two types of thiols.

2012, Developments in Clay ScienceCitation Excerpt :In terms of quantity, some 70–90% of the dry weight of the coating material is made up of finely divided minerals (e.g. kaolinites), applied as an aqueous suspension together with a suitable adhesive, and an additive or dispersant, such as polyacrylates and polyphosphate (Li et al., 2001; Sjöberg et al., 1999). Starch and casein are the classic adhesives used (Husband, 1998; Järnström et al., 1995; Kaliski, 1972) although such synthetic polymers as styrene–butadiene latex, poly(vinyl acetate), PVA, and acrylics have increasingly replaced the naturally occurring binding agents (Fadat et al., 1988; Li et al., 2001; Sjöberg et al., 1999). As might be expected, a wide range of mixtures can be formulated depending on the proportions and types of clay, adhesive, and additive used together with the conditions under which the mixture is to be applied to the sheet.

The same adsorption trend for potato and cornstarch was obtained by Husband (Husband, 1998). A microscopic study by Hirashima et al. (2005) revealed that more glucose chains were leached out from starch macromolecules as pH was decreased from 6.0 to 3.6, resulting in elevated solution viscosity.
