2012, Journal of VoiceCitation Excerpt :Traditionally, otolaryngologists have considered resolution of symptoms with empiric treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) to be diagnostic of LPR. Failure to respond has been believed to indicate misdiagnosis, inadequate treatment, or resistance to treatment.3 The pH-impedance testing seems to offer the most objective data and is considered the current “gold standard,” but the accuracy of this measure has come into question.

2002, American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Evidence is accumulating that reflux, the role of which in esophageal carcinoma is already known,28 is also of major etiologic importance in benign and malignant tumors of the larynx and the throat.14,16,25,29,30 It is known that 10% to 30% of patients fail to respond adequately to conventional treatment with proton pump inhibitors and prokinetic drugs, despite receiving high doses of these substances.10,12,13,31 In our patient population, this occurred in 11.1% of the cases.
