It is now well known that chronic pain states are associated with plastic changes in the nervous system and that the development of neuropathic pain states may involve functional changes in supraspinal components involved in pain perception.53-75 Therefore, 1 of the hypothesized mechanisms for the observed analgesic effect of rTMS is that the noninvasive stimulation can induce plastic changes in the brain, which in turn corrects or modulates plastic changes associated with chronic pain.
