Abstract

Independent assessments of (1) the clinical data and findings on gastric microscopy and (2) the presence of gastric autoantibodies were made in a group of Australian patients with pernicious anæmia, idiopathic chronic atrophic gastritis, and post-gastrectomy gastritis. Intrinsic-factor antibodies, whether anæmia was present or absent, were invariably associated with profoundly impaired absorption of vitamin B12. Parietal-cell antibodies were found in a high proportion of patients who gave evidence of either grossly or moderately impaired absorption of B12, but they were uncommon in patients with normal absorption. Gastric antibodies were not found in patients with post-gastrectomy gastritis, whether absorption was impaired or not. Gastric autoantibodies were not present when the gastric mucosa was microscopically normal.
