Synopsis

A modification of Jaffé's theory of column-ionization has been developed, this theory being in contradiction with the results of ionization experiments in liquefied gases at low temperatures. A critical analysis of the importance of each term in the equation of motion reveals that in the case of low temperatures the diffusion term has to be omitted ab initio. This procedure gives rise to a solution which, for currents small compared with the saturation current, differs markedly from Jaffé's solution and which is in better agreement with the experimental results.

As the electrons drift in one direction and the positive ions in the other, electrons and ions occasionally recombine. From the phenomenological consideration of electron–ion recombination, a large number of theoretical studies [20,37–42] have been made for over a century. Among these, Thomas and Imel gave a concise analytical expression in Ref. [20] after considering the recombination behavior for electron recoils or alpha particles in LXe.

This process is the columnar recombination. The works of Refs. [16–18] were summarized in Ref. [6]. In this reference, the columnar recombination phenomenon is studied to take into account the angular dependence in the fission chamber and to derive the fraction of electric charges that escape recombination in homogeneous columns.
