Self-expanding esophageal stents for the management of benign refractory esophageal strictures in children: A systematic review and review of outcomes at a single center
2019, Journal of Pediatric SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Esophageal stenting utilizes a similar principle to dilatations in that sustained circumferential radial pressure is applied to widen the lumen [8]. Initial reports of outcomes following esophageal stenting described the use of a silastic tube [10] or polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) rod [11,12], both secured at the nose. More recently, the use of self-expanding stents placed either endoscopically or under fluoroscopic guidance has been described.
Efficacy and risk profile of self-expandable stents in the management of pediatric esophageal pathology
2019, Journal of Pediatric SurgeryCitation Excerpt :Anastomotic strictures have been successfully treated with stents in 26% to 80% of affected children [6,26–28]. Other authors have shown that stents may be more useful in strictures due to caustic ingestion with success rates in the range of 50–93% [13,14,24,29]. At least one group has used custom silicone dynamic stents placed over nasogastric tubes with rates of stricture resolution approaching 93% for caustic strictures and 81% for anastomotic strictures [6,28].
Caustic Esophageal Stenosis: A Case Report of Endoscopic Dilation With a Dynamic Stent
2016, GE Portuguese Journal of GastroenterologyEndoscopic management of strictures in pediatrics
2013, Techniques in Gastrointestinal EndoscopyCitation Excerpt :SEPS have been shown to have similar results for benign strictures [71]; of 40 adult patients with benign strictures who had undergone multiple dilations, only 32% were symptom free 4 weeks after SEPS removal. As noted, no stents are specifically designed for children, and not surprisingly, early stents for caustic strictures involved solid or semiflexible tubes [72,73]. In the more recent eras, SEMS, SEPS, and biodegradable stents have been used for this purpose [74-76].
