    A close collaboration with Hitachi Japan and Picker in Germany resulted in 1991 in a prototype EUS endoscope equipped with a biopsy channel ending proximal to a curved array electronic transducer enabling a needle to be monitored during endosonography (Pentax FG-32 UA) (Fig. 1). Inspired by the publication of Rex and Wiersema who presented their experience with endoscopic transoesophageal guided biopsy following radial scanning EUS of mediastinal lesions, convinced us that real-time guided biopsy of lesions outlined by EUS would be feasible if the proper needle could be constructed [27]. A short collaboration with Cook Denmark (Cook Europe, Bjeverskov, Denmark) (Fig. 2) was initiated resulting in several prototype needles that were tested both in vitro and in vivo most of which were not very useful due to their flexibility and insufficient force translation.
