Enteral Access and Associated Complications
2018, Gastroenterology Clinics of North AmericaCitation Excerpt :Alternatively, balloon gastrostomy replacement tubes may be used as the surgical gastrostomy tube (Fig. 3). Studies comparing surgical gastrostomy with PEG tubes have shown no difference in morbidity or mortality.32 However, PEG is less expensive than surgical gastrostomy and has a reduced procedure time.
Enteral access and enteral nutrition in patients with short bowel syndrome

2016, Best Practice and Research: Clinical GastroenterologyCitation Excerpt :Gastrostomy tubes may be placed endoscopically, radiologically, or by surgery (laparoscopic or open). A study comparing endoscopic and surgical gastrostomy found that the two approaches did not differ in morbidity and mortality [2]. However the endoscopic approach is less invasive, and is favored unless the patient is already awaiting surgery or endoscopy is not feasible because of esophageal stricture or other anatomic obstacles.
