Abstract

Selectivity coefficients are reported for liquid membranes containing 27 macrocyclic lactones and lactonelactams with respect to alkali and alkaline-earth metal ions. It is shown that introduction of amide and ester groups into cyclic polyethers can modify the cation selectivity over a wide range. The results indicate the possibility of obtaining various highly selective membrane electrodes based on these neutral macroheterocyclic compounds.

Cs<sup>+</sup>-selective membrane electrodes based on ethylene glycol-functionalized polymeric microspheres

A new strategy for improving the robustness of membrane-based ion-selective electrodes (ISEs) is introduced based on the incorporation of microsphere-immobilized ionophores into plasticized polymer membranes. As a model system, a Cs⁺-selective electrode was developed by doping ethylene glycol-functionalized cross-linked polystyrene microspheres (P-EG) into a plasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) matrix containing sodium tetrakis-[3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl] borate (TFPB) as the ion exchanger. Electrodes were evaluated with respect to Cs⁺ in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, and dynamic response. ISEs containing P-EG and TFPB that were plasticized with 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) yielded a linear range from 10⁻¹ to 10⁻⁵ M Cs⁺, a slope of 55.4 mV/decade, and a lower detection limit (log a_Cs) of −5.3. In addition, these membranes also demonstrated superior selectivity over Li⁺, Na⁺, and alkaline earth metal ion interferents when compared to analogous membranes plasticized with bis(2-ethylhexyl) sebacate (DOS) or membranes containing a lipophilic, mobile ethylene glycol derivative (ethylene glycol monooctadecyl ether (U-EG)) as ionophore.
Cation slectivity of poly(vinyl chloride) membranes based on cryptands with thiourea fragments

Selectivity coefficients are reported for poly(vinyl chloride) membranes containing cryptands with thiourea fragments in one of the bridges (seven compounds). These membranes exhibit rubidium selectivity in the series of Group IA and IIA metal cations. The cryptand 1,3,12,14-tetraaza-6,9,17,20,25-pentaoxabicyclo[12.8.5]heptacosane-2,13-dithione is useful as the electrode-active compound in a rubidium-selective electrode. The electrode function is linear within the activity range 10⁻¹-10⁻⁴ M, and the slope is 48 ± 1 mV per decade. Selectivity coefficients are 0.005 for Li⁺, 0.006 for Na⁺, 0.015 for K⁺, 0.012 for Cs⁺, 0.006 for NH⁺₄, 0.0027 for Mg²⁺, 0.0032 for Ca²⁺, 0.0040 for Sr²⁺ and 0.0081 for Ba²⁺.
Sodium-selective electrodes based on PVC membranes containing bis[(3n+1)-crown-n] ether derivatives

The cationic selectivity and electrode characteristics of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) membranes based on bis[(3n+1-crown-n] ethers are discussed. The electrodes exhibit Nernstian responses over the sodium ion activity range 1×10⁻⁵–1 M and can be applied over the pH range 2–10. The sodium selectivity of the PVC membranes increases with decrease in the biscrown ether ring size. The membrane based on bis(10-crown-3)-hexamethylenebis(3,6,10-trioxacycloundecane) has k_Na,K^pot=6.15×10⁻³ and the detection limit for sodium cations is (6±0.5)×10⁻⁶ M.
