Abstract

The development of novel therapeutics in asthma has provided insights into understanding asthma heterogeneity and moves us toward targeted and personalized management. This article reviews the evolving definitions, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of severe asthma. We discuss traditional therapies but focus on new and emerging therapeutics for severe asthma, including anticholinergics, anti-IgE, anti-interleukin-5, anti-interleukin-4 and 13, CRTh2 antagonists, bronchial thermoplasty, and macrolide antibiotics.
