Abstract

Trends in wind turbine technology, research and future prospects are discussed. The architecture of the upwind horizontal axis, pitch regulated wind turbine operating in variable speed mode is now dominant among large wind turbines. Drive train developments are reviewed and the preeminence of permanent magnet generators in recent very large offshore turbines is evident. The first floating wind farms are established and airborne systems approach small scale commercialization. Wind projects collocated with energy storage systems, the production of hydrogen from wind energy and the wide-ranging impact of artificial intelligence on wind technology is reviewed.
