Abstract

Cannabis use disorders are frequently occurring in people with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. CapOpus was a randomized trial of 6 months of specialized CapOpus intervention as an add-on to treatment as usual (TAU), compared to TAU alone. CapOpus did not reduce frequency, but possibly the amount, of cannabis use. This is similar to what previous trials have found in this population. Implementation of CapOpus-type interventions is thus not warranted at present, but subgroup analyses call for further trials. CapOpus led to earlier and more psychiatric emergency room contacts and admissions that, however, were of fewer days. This pattern could indicate that participants receiving TAU were inadequately treated. However, it cannot be excluded that the differences might be an adverse reaction to the psychosocial intervention.
