Abstract

Serotonin, or 5-hydroxy tryptamine, is a small monoamine neurotransmitter essential for normal brain function. Dysfunction in the serotonin system can lead to a variety of neuropsychiatric disorders including depression and schizophrenia. In this review, the basic neuropharmacology of the serotonin system is discussed.
