Synopsis

Ozone depletion potentials (ODPs) is an extremely useful metric for policy considerations and scientific analyses for evaluating the relative effects of human emitted gases affecting the global atmospheric environment. ODPs arose as a simplified means for determining the relative ability of a chemical to destroy ozone. This concept for a relative measure of the cumulative impact on stratospheric ozone from trace gas emissions was found to be particularly useful by policymakers in their considerations to develop policy to protect stratospheric ozone from further destruction from emissions of halocarbons.
