Using an under-relaxed cooling algorithm we investigated the vacuum in the 2d O(3) model and 4d pure gauge SU(2). We calibrated the amount of cooling performed to have similar physical effect at different lattice spacings.

Recent progress in QCD condensate evaluations and sum rules

We review the recent status of the QCD sum rule approach to study the properties of hadrons in vacuum and in hot or dense matter. Special focus is laid on the progress made in the evaluation of the QCD condensates, which are the input of all QCD sum rule calculations, and for which much new information has become available through high precision lattice QCD calculations, chiral perturbation theory and experimental measurements. Furthermore, we critically examine common analysis methods for QCD sum rules and contrast them with potential alternative strategies. The status of QCD sum rule studies investigating the modification of hadrons at finite density as well as recent derivations of exact sum rules applicable to finite temperature spectral functions, are also reviewed.
Mean field, instantons and finite baryon density

Instantons create a non-local interaction between the quarks, which at finite baryon density leads to the formation of a scalar diquark condensate and color superconductivity. A mean field approach leads to a self-consistent description of the $< q q>$ and <qq> condensates and shows the inevitability of a BCS type instability at the Fermi surface. The role of the rearrangement of the instanton ensemble for the QCD phase transitions is also discussed.
Topology of the SU(2) vacuum: A lattice study using improved cooling

We study the topological structure of the SU(2) vacuum at zero temperature: topological susceptibility, size, shape and distance distributions of the instantons. We use a cooling algorithm based on an improved action with scale invariant instanton solutions. This algorithm needs no monitoring or calibration, has an inherent cut off for dislocations and leaves unchanged instantons at physical scales. The physical relevance of our results is checked by studying the scaling and finite volume dependence. We obtain a susceptibility of (200(15) MeV)⁴. The instanton size distribution is peaked around 0.43 fm, and the distance distribution indicates a homogeneous, random spatial structure.
Instantons and chiral symmetry restoration in QCD-like theories

At finite temperatures it is known that quark-induced interaction lead to formation of instanton-anti-instanton molecules, strongly polarized in time direction. We report first direct simulations of the statistical mechanics of the interacting instanton ensemble at finite temperatures. First of all, they confirmed that molecule formation is driving the chiral phase transition. It happens at T ⋍ 140 MeV (for two flavors) and is second order, while being weak first order if quark masses are as in QCD. We also calculated the behavior of thermodynamics, mesonic susceptibilities and screening masses near the phase transition: inside uncertaintes, all agrees with lattice results. Furthermore, the first order phase transition lines extend further in theories with larger number of flavors N_f: for sufficiently small masses we have found that chiral restoration happens at T = 0 already at N_f = 5.
