The ε′/ε ratio and other predictions in the eight-quark model

Abstract

Motivated by a new experimental result for ε′/ε, which verges on incompatibility with the six-quark model, we study the phenomenology of the eight-quark model. We find that the eight-quark model can very well explain this experimental result, but its other predictions are similar to those of the six-quark model. The only significant deviation is the possibility for CP violation due to the mixing of B⁰ and $B^{0}$ mesons. This effect can possibly be detected in measurements of the leptonic charge asymmetry in B⁰ and $B^{0}$ decays.

Influence of additional fermions and gauge bosons on Re(ϵ′/ϵ)

The CP-violation parameter Re(ϵ′/ϵ) has previously been calculated in the standard model and the result depends on the top quark mass m_t in an exciting way. We consider how the result is modified in two specific extensions of the standard model. The first adds only fermions, an extra vector-like quark doublet, and tends to reduce Re(ϵ′/ϵ). The second contains three extended fermion families with the third family treated differently and additional gauge bosons, in the 331 model, and can accommodate larger values of Re(ϵ′/ϵ) for a given m_t. When the experimental values of m_t and Re(ϵ′/ϵ) are known more accurately, it will allow discrimination between theories. If the lower experimental number Re(ϵ′/ϵ) = (0.74±0.60) × 10⁻³ (Fermilab, E731) is confirmed and m_t is near the expected value the standard model is acceptable. But, if the higher value Re(ϵ′/ϵ) = (2.3±0.65) × 10⁻³ (CERN, NA31) persists and m_t is around 150 GeV, a dynamics like the 331 model which treats the third family differently from the first two and contains additional gauge bosons seems to be favored.
Effective ΔS = 1 hamiltonian with a heavy top quark (m<inf>t</inf> > m<inf>W</inf>)

We compute the QCD corrections to the ΔS = 1 hamiltonian in the case of a heavy top quark. Special attention is paid to the modified energy scales, which influence the initial conditions and the development of the renormalized coefficients. We give explicit formulas for the coefficients and tabulate their numerical values. We also consider the changes introduced by a fourth generation of heavy quarks. Finally, we update the discussion of the $(ϵ′ ϵ)_{K}$ parameter in three and four generations including the new QCD corrections.

Top quark mass and mixings in the presence of a heavy quark family

The top quark mass and mixings are studied in the framework of an extended Fritzsch model for purposes of illustration, where the fourth family of heavy quarks either form a standard doublet or exist simply as isosinglets. We have fixed the masses of the heavy quarks near the infrared fixed point, unlike previous studies which select the top quark mass in a narrow range and then try to predict the heavy quark masses. The models are satisfactorily with a top mass near 70 GeV and suggest that the appearance of a top quark mass significantly lower than 90 GeV, as favored by three quark families in previous studies, can serve as a strong hint of new physics beyond the standard model.
Rephasing-invariant parametrization of the quark mixing matrix

We suggest that within the context of the standard model with three generations, the most convenient way of parametrizing the Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix is through four independent moduli of its matrix elements. For three generations the strength of CP violation is completely determined from the knowledge of a set of independent moduli. We extend this parametrization to the case of four generations and analyze in detail the unitarity constraints on the quark mixing matrix. These unitarity constraints are expressed in terms of independent moduli of the quark mixing matrix and can be a useful tool in obtaining precise experimental tests of unitarity.
