Abstract

Abstract-Infrared absorptions of aniline in which 31·9 per cent of nitrogen is 15N and 68·1 per cent is 14N were examined in dilute CCl4 and CS2 solutions by means of a grating instrument. For five bands at 3481·4, 3395·2, 1618·9, 1276·1 and 1114·6 cm−1 appreciable isotope shifts were observed. It was shown that these bands are to be assigned, respectively, to NH2 antisymmetric stretching, NH2 symmetric stretching, NH2 bending, C-N stretching and NH2 rocking (or twisting) vibrations.

Asymmetric and symmetric vN–H stretches of ligands around 3459 and 3358 cm−1, disappeared upon chelation, to form complexes [50]. The electron density of the nitrogen directed towards the metal ion, gave rise to the observed reduced frequency [51]. In the far IR region, absorption bands around 417–446 cm−1 and 511–514 cm−1 are attributed to vCu–O and vCu–N, respectively for all complexes [52–55].

The asymmetric in-plane deformation vibration of amino group is found only in the IR spectra of DAS and ADMAS at 1080 and 1058 cm−1, respectively, that is well correlated with the range where they are usually observed [59]. The CN stretching mode of primary amines occurs usually at 1275-1285 cm−1 [60,61]. Not contradicting to this, the CN stretching vibration appears in the experimental spectra near 1280 cm−1 and is in a good agreement with the computed values for all three stilbene dyes.
